TEACHERS
A number of excellent resources are available
to teachers and educators who want to include information
on organ/tissue donation and transplantation in their
classrooms. These materials are also available to leaders
of youth groups, service groups and civic groups. Some
of these materials are appropriate for any age, while
others have target audience ages, which are noted. Carolina
Donor Services asks that you please call us if you have
feedback about these materials or if you are seeking
something more specific for your classroom.
Decision:
Donation - School Program
Decision: Donation is an instructional
package for high schools that was created by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services. It envisioned
educating the nation's youth about the importance of
organ and tissue donation and the need to make an informed
decision about donation and share it with their families.

materials and Secretary Thompson's national initiative

A License
to Give High School Program
The
North Carolina Coalition on Donation (NCCOD) is
a statewide collaborative initiative dedicated to saving
and improving lives by promoting organ, eye and tissue
donation awareness and education. NCCOD was pleased
to find that organ and tissue donation competency goals
have been incorporated into the Healthful Living school
curriculum for 9th graders in North Carolina public
schools. The State Board of Education/Department of
Public Instruction's goal for these students is that
they will be able to describe the procedures for organ
donation, local and state resources, and benefits to
society. This presents the North Carolina Coalition
on Donation with an excellent opportunity to assist
teachers in our state in educating youths about this
vital issue.
The North Carolina Coalition on Donation
has developed a kit called "A License to Give"
to help teachers introduce the topic of organ, eye and
tissue donation to students in a thoughtful, meaningful,
interactive way. "A License to Give" kit contains
teacher and student resource guides, an 18-minute videotape,
suggested activities and educational materials. You
can download these materials here or visit the Learn
NC website to download these resources at http://www.learnnc.org/lessons/licensetogive030106

Bambis Story Video (VHS
or DVD)
Bambis Story is a 10-minute
narrated photo essay describing the life of Bambi,
who as a young mother is on the transplant waiting
list for a heart. The true story follows Bambi as
she is in-and-out of the hospital while hooked to
an artificial heart pump and trying to raise her daughter
and lead a normal life. The real-life ending to this
story reminds us how urgent the need for donors really
is.
Brooke's Wish Video (VHS)
A 15-minute videotape about 18-year-old
Brooke Phillips, a high school senior from Asheboro
who was killed in a car accident, and whose parents
chose to donate her organs and tissues, saving and
enhancing the lives of more than 50 people. In addition
to Brooke's family, the tape features interviews with
a transplant surgeon and a kidney recipient. The videotape
was produced by the North Carolina Electric Membership
Corporation when it adopted organ donation awareness
as its annual volunteer project. This tape is excellent
for high school students, including driver's education
classes. For a copy of the videotape, please call
Carolina Donor Services at 1-800-200-2672.
"Pass It On" Video
and Educational Kit (VHS)
This comprehensive curriculum on
organ/tissue donation and transplantation was developed
by education and health care professionals. One of
the 15-minute videos is geared to students ages 9-12
and the other 10-minute video was created to reach
teens who are preparing to drive. The curriculum videos
are ideal for science, health, driver's education,
social studies and health occupation classes. The
materials can also be used outside the classroom for
youth programs and church groups. An outline of the
curriculum is on the website, http://www.passitonforlife.org
or call CDS to request a video.
